Microdermabrasion in Action

Microdermabrasion has in fact been around for centuries in various shapes and forms. Even Cleopatra used abrasive masks to help resurface her skin and improve its texture; thankfully methods have dramatically improved since then! While there are numerous companies offering Microdermabrasion systems, at Beauty of Bedford, we decided to use the Crystal Clear method.

Profiled in many magazines and newspapers, Crystal Clear has been around for over ten years and has a huge celebrity following. If it's good for the likes of Madonna, Victoria Beckham, Jude Law, Liz Hurley and Cameron Diaz, then it's good enough for us!

So What Exactly is It?

Microdermabrasion is a safe and controlled method of skin resurfacing whereby the outer layers of the skin are gently exfoliated. Regular treatments stimulate collagen production and elastin formation resulting in much firmer and more rejuvenated skin, while the gentle vacuum action provides a little workout for the face; a lifting effect on tired muscles is achieved with instant results.

How does it work?

A handset glides across the skin while releasing a flow of crystals which gently remove dead skin cells. These are then drawn away from the face through the vacuum action of the handset. This can sometimes result in a mild redness which is a sign that blood cells are rushing to the surface of the skin and the regeneration process is beginning. The body reacts to the disappearance of old skin cells by replacing them with fresh new ones at a speed which is quicker than what the body would normally produce. Over a course of treatments taken at regular intervals, a fresher skin will emerge with fewer imperfections.

Why should you have it done?

Microdermabrasion delivers immediate results! Your skin will feel soft and smooth after the very first treatment regardless of your skin type or colour, leaving you with a healthy glow.

Because the treatment stimulates collagen reproduction, it's great for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It improves your skin's elasticity and tone, resulting in an overall rejuvenated skin and it is also fantastic for unblocking pores and helping to reduce acne scarring and blemishes.

Your skin needs and exercise programme to keep it supple and elastic just like your body does. Microdermabrasion stimulates microcirculation and encourages your skin to produce its own collagen and elastin. If Microdermabrasion is followed at an early age, it can keep the signs of ageing at bay for longer, helping to retain your youthful look.

With acne prone skin, dead cells build up around the hair follicles and restrict the drainage of oil from the skin. This causes the hair follicle to clog and fill and the blockage that occurs will lead to comedones (black heads) and congestion. Regular Microdermabrasion will help remove these blockages, and cleanse the pores so your skin can rid itself of the excessive oils naturally.

Sun damaged skin can also be treated with Microdermabrasion. In order to protect itself from the sun, the skin will produce extra cells and become thicker. It is for this reason that sun worshippers are often left with thicker, rougher drier skin. A course of Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion will balance out skin cell production, leaving a more even skin tone, with a fresher appearance.

Microdermabrasion can also help to reduce pigmentation marks on the skin. Pigmentation is a common problem these days as it can be caused by birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, pregnancy, some types of medication, sun damage. Regular Microdermabrasion will encourage the pigmentation on your skin you move up through your layers of skin and eventually be exfoliated. As no chemicals are used, there is no risk of bleaching any parts of your skin so it is safe for any skin type or colour.

We love this treatment at Beauty of Bedford; Selina and I both suffer from acne scarring and it's fading away very nicely. It has been a very popular treatment since its launch here in December and we can certainly see why! Microdermabrasion is much better than a normal scrub or those home kits you can buy in the shops. With those, you are merely loosening your dead surface skin cells but they remain on your skin. With the salon version, the vacuum sucks away all the impurities and dead skin leaving behind a much fresher, cleaner, clearer skin underneath. You can even see what has been sucked up from your skin afterwards! (Some people like that bit, others don't want to see it!).

If you're thinking about Microdermabrasion, come in and try one. If you like the results, a course of ten weekly treatments is definitely recommended. This way we work through two skin cycles, making sure a fresher, brighter, less blemished skin can emerge with a more youthful appearance.

Special Offer When You Buy a Course of Ten

When you a buy a course of ten weekly treatments, we will give you homecare worth over £100 absolutely free!

The homecare consists of a Cleansing Gel, Tonic, Brightening Complex and Repair Serum. If you're going to invest all this time and effort into your skin, then you should really do the homecare to maintain results and keep your skin healthy.

The Cleansing Gel is a gentle foaming wash which cleans deep but is soap free. It contains a moisturising complex to help your skin cells retain water, cucumber extract to soothe and moisturise, Vitamin C and B for skin cell renewal and a refattening agent which leaves a film on your skin to protect it from the environment. I really like this as it because it leaves your skin really soft and feeling properly cleansed.

The Brightening Complex is a moisturiser that contains natural skin brighteners and an SPF of 15. It reduces pigmentation and brings out your natural radiance and skin clarity. It contains burberry and mulberry which are natural skin brighteners, arbutin which inhibits your melanin production (what makes you turn brown) and so keeps age spots and pigmentation at bay, and titanium dioxide which has a natural SPF of 15. By using this product every day your skin will look a lot brighter after a month of use.

The Repair Serum is another moisturiser which can be used alone or mixed with the Brightening Complex. A fantastic anti-ageing moisturiser, this cream slows down the ageing process and smoothes out fine lines by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. The cream contains wheat proteins which increase the firmness of the skin, silk proteins to soothe and alistin. Alistin slows down the ageing process by keeping cells alive for longer while at the same time it stimulates the production of elastin and collagen.

Finally, after you've cleansed and moisturised, comes the toner. A bit hard to get used to at first, as it's been drummed into us since we were young to cleanse, tone, then moisturise, but now we do it last. The tonic spray removes impurities from your skin and we spray it on last so it locks in all the moisture from the other products. Containing no alcohol so it's good for even the most sensitive of skins, it does contain cucumber and marine elements which keep your skin elastic and fresh.

You only get one face in this life so look after it! We chose Microdermabrasion by Crystal Clear because this company has built up a very good reputation over the 10 years that it has been around. A celebrity favourite and always featured in national magazines and newspapers, we also liked the way it was a progressive treatment and so much gentler on your skin than other versions on the market. We've been really pleased with the results so far, and you will be too.
